Mr. Phil Wingfield graduated with a B.M. in K-12 Instrumental Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2014 (magna cum laude), where he was the recipient of the 2014 Thomas Stone Award for Outstanding Musicianship, the Phi Mu Alpha Scholarship Award, as well as the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award. While at UNCG Phil was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble, as well as a member of the Iota Epsilon chapter of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Music Fraternity. He was also a recipient of the Ethel Virginia Butler Memorial Academic Scholarship and an undergraduate researcher with the Bio-Music department.
Phil has performed professionally as the bass trombonist (and unicyclist) with the Tony and Emmy award winning theatrical production Blast! in two American tours and three international tours in Japan and South Korea since 2011. He aged out from DCI with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 2011 where he was the baritone soloist. In addition, Phil was a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps in 2008, and the 2006 and 2007 Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corps. Phil taught for 2 summers with the Oregon Crusaders in 2015 and 2016.
After graduating Phil spent a year in South Florida, where he was the musical co-caption head for Stryke Wynds, who won the silver medal in the Independent Open class at WGI Winds' inaugural season. In addition to his duties with Stryke Wynds, he was a clinician and freelance trombonist. Phil has taught numerous marching bands across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, and has been an active marching band judge.
Phil is the current Assistant director of bands at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, NC, where he has taught since January 2016.
